Ellen Stackable, executive director of Poetic Justice, has an ambitious goal: To show the 22-minute documentary in each of Oklahoma’s 77 counties before elections kick off in November.
“The sky is falling and you’ve heard me say that before, but it’s actually gotten worse,” Department of Corrections Director Joe Allbaugh said.
While an effort is ongoing to lower the state’s prison figures, it may be too early to celebrate the new federal data that shows a 6 percent decline in the state’s prison population.
During Fiscal Year 2017, Oklahoma district attorneys were awarded more than $6.2 million in cash — up from $3.1 million the prior year — believed to be involved in the drug trade that was seized by law enforcement.
Using records, interviews and police reports, The Frontier has collected stories on each of June’s 14 homicide victims. Their stories illustrate the varying nature of the city’s rising homicide figures.
Several agencies have said they do not have any untested kits and have not submitted anything to the task force. Small departments that claim to not have used any rape kits might not have turned in an audit.
The nine-page claim, obtained by The Frontier through an Open Records Act request, alleges inhumane treatment, gross negligence and deliberate indifference caused the 16-year-old’s death.
Bates’ supervision was transferred back to Tulsa County, DOC spokesman Matt Elliott confirmed on Friday. Elliott said he couldn’t comment on why Bates’ supervision returned to Oklahoma, but did say Bates could not live out of state if his supervision was in Tulsa.
