The Frontier has hired Garrett Yalch to expand its coverage of Tulsa. Yalch will report on city and county government and other Tulsa-area news.
Yalch grew up in Tulsa and graduated in May from Washington University in St. Louis with a degree in philosophy. He served two summer internships for The Frontier while in college, reporting on economic and racial inequality, education and the environment. Yalch also previously did an internship with the KOSU news and public affairs radio program Focus: Black Oklahoma.
Over the past year, Yalch has been working on a series of stories with The Frontier and ProPublica about the connections between Oklahoma’s black market marijuana industry and Chinese criminal organizations. Yalch and others on the reporting team interviewed dozens of law enforcement officials, academic experts, attorneys, farm workers, Chinese dissidents, Chinese-American leaders and human rights advocates and reviewed thousands of pages of court documents, government reports and other records for the series.
