Juneteenth celebrations in Tulsa always mean a little bit more, given the city’s history with the 1921 race riots.

This year the celebration, which marks the date that word reached the area that the Civil War was over and slaves were now free, will primarily take place in the Greenwood District, the site of those race riots.

Events begin on Thursday and last through Sunday. A calendar is available here.

On this week’s podcast we have Jason McIntosh, CEO of the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame and Sherry Laskey, Vendor Chair of the Tulsa Juneteenth celebration, here to tell us about the event and what to expect if you plan on going.
