“I think the primary reason people should be opposed to the death penalty is we’ve proven that we have killed innocent people,” he said. “We are fallible. That’s the kind of mistake that is irreversible.”
The city will be extending Fifth Street west to the front of the Aloft Hotel and constructing a turnaround. They’ll also take out some curbing on Frisco Avenue and make parking improvements along the road.
Member of family that donated park land says REI store would be good use for property.
“We have said we think— and it would be in the best interests of the city— to have attractions to enhance the property,” Helmerich said. “I think a responsible commercial layout is a good thing for that property.”
The Tulsa Public Facilities Authority is expected to approve the deal for an REI sporting goods store at 71st and Riverside Drive within the next two weeks. Not so fast, opponents say. They’ve taken to social media to urge city officials to allow more public comment on the proposed project.
“When is it going to be a good time (to go out for an RFP),” said County Commissioner Smaligo said. “Are we not going to lose a certain percentage of detention officers whenever we go out for an RFP?”
The city reveals details for a proposed REI store at 71st and Riverside. But some citizens say the city is moving too fast.
Jail authority members had earlier voted to draw up a request for proposals to operate the jail privately. However one trustee, who initially supported seeking the RFP, said she had a change of mind after hearing that detention officers were leaving their jobs because they were unsure of what the future might hold.
The plan is to have 216 bicycles and 24 stations in place citywide within five years. Phase 1 of the program would focus on downtown; Phase 2 would expand the program’s scope to such places as TU and Brookside.
