The new unemployment data comes at a time when several Oklahoma mayors, faced with increasingly high numbers of COVID-19 cases in their cities, have started to re-implement some restrictions on businesses and social gatherings, aimed at stopping the spread of the disease.
The Oklahoma Employment Security Commission is also planning to host an in-person claims processing event in Tulsa on July 15 and 16, though a location has yet to be determined.
Though Monday’s vote means that the contract to hold immigration detainees for ICE at the jail will end in 90 days, it does not end the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office’s contract with the federal agency to hold and turn over to ICE people with suspected immigration violations who are initially booked in to the jail on other complaints, known as the 287(g) program.
Protestors and Trump supporters engaged in verbal, and sometimes heated confrontations, but demonstrations were largely nonviolent.
While ending the contract would mean Tulsa County would no longer supply jail beds to house and transportation services to ICE detainees, it does not end the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office’s participation in the 287(g) program.
“Defendants are nothing more than front companies utilized by TRG to obtain contracts set aside for legitimate small and other disadvantaged concerns and to illegally obtain payments from the Government,” the whistleblower lawsuit filed against the Ross Group states.
Tulsa mayor GT Bynum told The Frontier the decision on possibly implementing a curfew would be up to Tulsa Police. But the police department said the decision rested with Bynum.
About an hour after the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission meeting ended, the agency’s executive director Robin Roberson submitted her resignation.
